The Breast Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for performing a variety of specialized technical tasks in Breast Care utilizing high frequency sound waves to assist medical and professional personnel in detecting anatomical abnormalities of the breast.
Responsibilities:A day in the life of a Breast Ultrasound Technologist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
- Performs procedures according to departmental format, completing exam in allotted time.
- Performs required daily clerical duties, which include the use of Epic, computer system, patient scheduling and other computer systems added by the Medical Center.
- Performs a variety of complex technical tasks in utilizing high frequency sound waves to detect anatomical abnormalities including masses and abscesses in accordance with prescribed sonographic procedures.
- Identifies patient's images with the correct name, MRN and that images are correctly marked to the breast side and that all images have Technologist's initials
- Assist Radiologist with biopsy studies and color-flow ultrasound as required.
- Determines, prepares and sets up medical supplies, instruments and equipment.
- Prepares patients for diagnostic procedures, explains procedures, measures and positions patients for each anatomical view.
- Performs portable breast imaging on ER and inpatients as needed.
- Responsible for interviewing and discharging patients after their procedure.
- Ensures proper labeling of specimen bags
- Evaluates technical quality of images.
- Obtains and processes images of pathogenic conditions in accordance with standard procedures or techniques.
- Maintains records of ultrasound taken, archiving and de-archiving data as required.
- Calibrates, cleans and performs routine maintenance on equipment to ensure proper functioning.
- Cleans and sterilizes instruments, supplies and equipment. Stocks and replenish supplies as required.
- Lifts a minimum of 25 lbs., pushes and pulls a minimum of 50 lbs. and stands a minimum of 8 hours a day.
- Greets in/out patients when they arrive for their exam utilizing A.I.D.E.T. standards.
- Responsible for scheduled shifts including holidays and weekends.
- Overtime as needed to provide continual quality patient care.
- Identifies the needs of the patient population served, modifies and delivers care that is specific to those needs (i.e., age, culture,language, hearing and/or visually impaired, etc. ) This process includes communicating with the patient, parent and/or primary caregiver(s) at their level (developmental/age, educational, literacy, etc.)
- Adheres to the policies of Employee ID, Standards of behavior, Attendance, Punctuality and Organizational Competencies.
- Performs other duties as directed by supervisory personnel.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Graduate of an approved Ultrasound School.
- A.R.D.M.S registered.
- A minimum of 2 years training in Allied Health/College.
- Certified in Breast within 6 months of hire.
- Must be able to do CPR.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills that include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
- A minimum of 1 year of clinical experience in ultrasound.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Certification or Breast Sonography Certification.
- Maintains 30 CEU Credits within a three year period.
