- Education and Experience
- Graduate of an accredited Masters level program.
- Two years clinical experience with at least one year experience as a SLP-CCC is required
- Environmental / Working Conditions
- Works inside under normal temperature conditions with adequate light, in a well ventilated, clean area. Some areas are limited in space, and some patient rooms/specific units such as the Burn Unit may be warm. Usually works around others, may expect some moderate noise. Frequently works with biologic or infectious agents, and may be exposed to communicable diseases. May come in contact with irritating chemicals or sprays. May be exposed to muscular strain in supporting, lifting and assisting patients.
- Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships
- The therapist must display a professional attitude at all times, be thoughtful of others, neat and well groomed . The therapist will need to carry out close working relationships with many people including but not limited to the Director and Assistant Director, other Speech Pathologists, PT’s, PTA’s, support personnel, OT, Audiologists, Physicians, Nursing Staff, Social Services, Respiratory Therapy, Radiology, Food and Nutrition, and most importantly patients and their family members or caregivers. The therapist should have the flexibility to schedule around the afore mentioned services if needed, and have the ability to organize time in order to treat the maximum number of patients in the allotted working day. The therapist should also offer help to co-workers in the event of conflicts/cancellations in their patient load.
- Job Description
- The Speech Language Pathology Supervisor has the responsibility to evaluate, treat, establish a plan of care, and assess speech therapy programs for patients referred to PM&R for Speech Pathology services. The speech pathologist is expected to maintain the highest level of quality patient care at all times. The speech pathologist will assist in the orientation, supervision, and training of staff speech pathologists and support personnel, as well as students and volunteers. The speech pathologist will be expected to be involved in clinical education of graduate level SLP externs and help supervise other clinical supervisors as needed. The speech pathologist will be expected to complete daily documentation and charges, and schedule patients daily. The speech pathologist may be assigned to other specialty areas, and it will be expected that the speech pathologist is competent in all areas provided by this Department. The speech pathologist will assist in the development and initiation of new programs, and may participate in management decisions. The speech pathologist will adhere to policies, procedures, and standards of practice as defined by and/or stated by the 1) American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 2) Texas Speech-Language-Hearing Association, 3) Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization Manual, 4) UMC Standard Policy and Procedure Manual, 5) PM&R Policy and Procedure Manual.
- Required Licensures / Certificiations / Registrations
- Must hold Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech Pathology by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
- Must hold current Texas State Licensure.
- Physical Capabilities
- The therapist should have good physical stamina, be able to be on feet most of the day, and be fairly strong and energetic. Work frequently requires much walking, standing, carrying, talking and hearing, and listening. Lifting more than 50 pounds is occasionally required to reposition patients. Hours may be long and irregular, and may include weekends.
