The Underwriter I is responsible for underwriting conforming mortgage loans. Which includes: rendering credit decisions on incoming applications consistent with internal and insurer policies, underwriting mortgage commitments, and verifying supporting documentation as submitted by Loan Officer.
Responsibilities:
• Analyze employment profile, credit strength, property characteristics, and all other information pertinent to the credit decision process on each mortgage application, as presented by the Loan Officer
• Apply internal guidelines and insurer guidelines (FNMA, FHLB, FMHL and Northpointe Bank Portfolio guidelines) to the credit decision process.
• Negotiate loan terms (where applicable) in order to satisfy the interests of the client and Northpointe Bank.
• Prioritize deals in Workflow TM queue in order to minimize turnaround time.
• Verify accuracy of supporting employment, down payment, appraisal, and financial documentation
• Correspond with Loan Officer and LOA's and Loan Coordinators to attain outstanding documentation needed to complete requirements as stipulated on the commitment issued.
• Review documentation for compliance with internal and regulatory guidelines
• Work with Post Closing when loans have been suspended
• Select required conditions on each deal to be satisfied by the solicitor and the broker prior to funding.
• Supporting the Loan Coordinator in issuing the changed circumstance forms for all redisclosures when needed.
• Assist in streamlining daily processes and procedures.
• Meet or exceed closed loan goals each month with no errors.
• Meet established standards and guidelines with regard to compliance, job knowledge, quality, attendance, efficiency, initiative, customer service, and overall performance.
• Maintain customer confidence by providing ongoing quality service and keeping all files and information confidential.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge and compliance with internal policies and procedures. Understand and ensure compliance with laws, rules, and regulations affecting our institution.
• Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers and customers, work independently and is self-motivated.
• Effective project management skills and the ability to proactively problem solve.
Requirements:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 2 years mortgage experience preferred
• At least 2-year mortgage underwriting. Processing knowledge
• Strong communication skills, verbal and written
• Strong analytical skills
• Demonstrated ability to resolve complicated issues as they arise
• Experience with the following: Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, RD, MSHDA, OHFA, Wells Fargo and FHLB.
• Proven organizational skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize and multi-task
• Thorough understanding and knowledge of mortgage documents.
• Proficient computer skills (i.e., Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, any other mortgage/banking software, etc.).
• Professional demeanor and interaction with all customers (internal and external).
• Effective interpersonal and communications (written and verbal) skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment as well as independently.
• Must be a self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision while obtaining satisfactory results.
• Ability to pay attention to detail while handling a high volume of work with multiple interruptions.
