Job Description Summary
The Division of Cardiology at the Medical University of South Carolina invites applications for a Data Scientist/Artificial Intelligence Engineer at the Senior Research Associate (SRA) level. This role is ideal for a collaborative data scientist with a keen interest in biomedical research. A master’s degree or PhD in data science, artificial intelligence, biostatistics, or a related field is required.The Division of Cardiology, along with the Heart Artificial Intelligence Lab (HEAL), boasts a large and expanding program of both collaborative and internal research. The position will involve highly collaborative interactions within the Division of Cardiology, including with the Principal Investigator of the HEAL lab (Dr. Ramsey Wehbe) and collaborators (including Dr. Michele Esposito). There will be an emphasis on projects that are a priority of the lab, including innovative approaches to the analysis of unstructured data (imaging, clinical notes, ECG/waveforms) using state-of-the-art machine learning/deep learning algorithms in the diagnosis and management of heart failure.
Candidates should be able to work independently and have experience in data science, machine learning, and statistical programming. Strong skills in data analysis, reporting, interpretation, and communication (both oral and written) are essential. Candidates should have experience working in cloud computing environments (particularly Microsoft Azure and Azure ML) as well as experience with remote computing using secure shell protocol (SSH) into a remote high-performance computing server. Experience with Dockerized application development/environment management is desirable. At least 1 year of professional programming experience in Python is required (evidence of experience based on classwork or certifications can be substituted for professional experience). Experience with common ML and DL open-source Python libraries (including scikit-learn, NumPy, SciPy, PyTorch, and TensorFlow/Keras), natural language processing/large language model libraries and APIs (Huggingface, OpenAI API, Anthropic API), and computer vision libraries (opencv, scikit-image, PIL, torchvision) is required.

Job Description
Job Duties:
35% - Analysis of data/training and development of AI/ML/DL algorithms.
25% - Application programming and development
20% - Data management
15% - Participate in study design, development, and data acquisition
5% - Administrative support.
Preferred Experience, Skills, and abilities: Will hold MS, ScM, MSPH, or MPH in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Biostatistics, Statistics, Mathematics or equivalent. Appropriate candidates with a terminal degree (PhD, DrPH, MD) are eligible for staff SRA positions, but may be better suited for the faculty SRA track.
Experience in data science, machine learning, and statistical programming, as well as data analysis, reporting, and interpretation.
Proficiency in Python with at least 1 year of professional programming experience or equivalent classwork/certifications.
Experience with cloud computing environments (particularly Microsoft Azure and Azure ML) and remote computing using SSH into a remote high-performance computing server.
