Job Title: Universal Heavy Equipment Operator Location: Phoenix, AZ (Multiple Projects) Reports To: Superintendent Department: Operations / Construction
Position Summary:
DBA Construction Inc. is seeking a skilled and experienced Universal Heavy Equipment Operator to safely operate a variety of heavy machinery at construction sites. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in running and maneuvering equipment such as graders, dozers, mini excavators, skid steers, and more. The role requires attention to detail, a high level of safety awareness, and the ability to work effectively in a team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate Heavy Equipment: Safely and effectively operate a variety of heavy equipment, including bulldozers, cranes, loaders, backhoes, excavators, graders, forklifts, and other specialized machinery as required by the job site.
- Site Preparation & Excavation: Prepare and level ground for construction, mining, or landscaping projects; excavate trenches or foundations; backfill and compact material to prepare surfaces for subsequent construction or landscaping activities.
- Material Handling: Load and unload materials, equipment, and supplies, ensuring they are handled safely and efficiently.
- Maintenance & Inspections: Perform routine equipment inspections and basic maintenance (checking fluid levels, cleaning filters, etc.). Report any mechanical issues or potential hazards to maintenance personnel.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety regulations and operational guidelines. Follow best practices for safe operation of machinery and maintain a clear understanding of OSHA and other relevant safety standards.
- Site Coordination: Work in coordination with other crew members, contractors, and site supervisors to ensure efficient workflow and minimal delays in project timelines. Communicate effectively to plan work assignments and follow instructions.
- Troubleshooting & Problem Solving: Troubleshoot and resolve minor equipment malfunctions or challenges that arise during operations. Notify supervisors of major issues that require repair.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of equipment usage, maintenance, fuel consumption, and hours worked. Complete timesheets and other necessary reports on a regular basis.
- Weather & Terrain Adaptability: Adapt to various work conditions such as extreme weather, rough terrain, or difficult access to ensure smooth operation of equipment.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of 5-years operating a wide range of heavy equipment on construction, excavation, or industrial sites. Experience with specific machinery (e.g., excavators, bulldozers, cranes) is highly preferred.
- Certifications: Valid operator's license or certification for heavy machinery (specific licenses may depend on the type of equipment and local regulations). Certification in heavy equipment operation (e.g., NCCCO, OSHA) may be required.
- Technical Skills: Strong mechanical aptitude to troubleshoot and maintain heavy machinery. Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance.
- Safety Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of safety protocols, including personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, hazard recognition, and adherence to OSHA standards.
- Physical Requirements: Must be physically fit, able to lift heavy objects, and work in physically demanding conditions, including standing for long periods, climbing, and operating machinery in all weather conditions.
- Communication: Ability to work well with others and communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify problems or inefficiencies and take proactive steps to address them.
Preferred Skills & Qualifications:
- Additional Equipment Expertise: Experience with more specialized heavy equipment, such as cranes, dump trucks, or trenchers, is a plus.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent: Some employers may prefer formal education or completion of an apprenticeship program.
- First Aid & CPR Certification: While not always required, certification in first aid and CPR is an asset.
Work Environment:
- The role is typically performed on outdoor construction or industrial sites with exposure to varying weather conditions.
- May require extended hours or overtime depending on project timelines.
- Occasional travel may be required, especially for large projects or jobs at multiple locations.
Physical Demands:
- Standing, sitting, bending, and lifting frequently.
- Exposure to noisy, dusty, or muddy environments.
- Ability to operate heavy machinery with precision.
