About the Job
The Wilberforce School is seeking an Upper School Head, a cultural and academic leader of the faculty, staff, and students of grades 6-12. The pioneering phase of the high school is complete - establishing programmatic structures (e.g. a house system, athletic program, junior independent work) and rhythms of school life. The task now is to continue to build a robust culture of faith and learning as we finish the build-out of the school. As such, the US Head role is highly pastoral, involving spiritual and cultural as well as academic leadership of faculty, students and parents.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Leadership of the Middle and Upper School faculty, students, and parents
- Oversight of the 6-12 curricular and co-curricular program
Detailed Responsibilities:
Spiritual Leadership:
- Integrate Biblical principles and a Christian worldview into all curricula and teaching
- Be prepared to communicate the school’s religious beliefs to students and others who inquire
- Follow Matthew 18 principles in addressing issues with students, parents, staff, and administration
Administrative Leadership:
- Oversight over Middle School (MS) and Upper school (US) personnel
- Developing and maintaining a culture consistent with the mission and vision of the school.
- Programmatic, academic, or community related decisions directly impact the sustainability and robustness of our mission lived out in the culture of the school.
- Recruiting, interviewing, and hiring new faculty & staff (in coordination with Head of School)
- Assistance with admissions - articulating our mission to prospective families; assessment, placement and transitioning of new students
- Planning of MS/US programming (academic, extracurricular, logistical)
- Evaluation of teachers, training, and teacher growth plans (including the evaluation of these plans)
- Leading the Deans, House Leader, and Department Chairs in all aspects of MS/US Community life
- Curriculum plans and their execution, including with regard to student progress
- Working with Administrative Cabinet concerning all community-wide events and marketing, facilities needs, and planning
- Working with College Admissions Director to ensure our students are progressing well in their studies and with their college preparation objectives
- Working with the Front Desk concerning attendance and or tardy related issues
- Working with the Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) to select and give guidance to Classroom Representatives
- Working with the Director of Operations to support and develop school events, such as Evening with Grandfriends and Evening of the Arts
- Reviewing MS/US schedules and schedule changes
- Planning professional development for MS/US teachers
- Approving final decisions for MS/US (ex. uniforms, procedures, handbooks, faculty requests)
- Approving purchase requests of MS/US classes (in conjunction with Athletic Director, Director of Operations) and monitoring spending to keep a consistent budget (in conjunction with Business Manager)
- Communicating with parents about MS/US activities, plans, and special events

Required Experience:

- Demonstrated ability to shepherd and lead
- A living Christian faith and ability to articulate the need for integration of orthodox biblical faith with academic inquiry and to help students, faculty and parents navigate contemporary culture grounded in orthodox Christian faith, theology and practice
- A life-long learner who can lead our community of learners in the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty, grounded in God's immutable character and scriptures
- Experience leading and teaching at the high school level
- Understanding of, and agreement with the mission, philosophy and pedagogy of The Wilberforce School, including classical framework and Charlotte Mason influence
- Understands the unique developmental needs of middle and high school students and how to address these needs, problems and interests
- Godly character, maturity, and emotional stability
- A heart for young people of this age group, and their parents, and an understanding of their unique characteristics and the challenges they are facing in this postmodern world
- Ability to interact with and lead youth of this age; a strong desire to see them learn well, know and love God, and serve him in their daily lives
- Regular in-person attendee in good standing (i.e., not under church discipline) at a local Christian church (and a member, if membership is offered). The church’s beliefs are consistent with the school’s statement of faith
Education:
- Masters preferred
Experience:
- 5 Years experience in middle and high school settings preferred
