Summary
NorthStar Coaches are front line roles charged with developing the technical skills in youth needed to participate and compete in the athletic offerings at NorthStar. The Head Coach is responsible for the health, safety and welfare of every student athlete participating in the program. The success of the Lacrosse Program has a strong influence on NorthStar Foundation’s position and image within the community. NorthStar seeks to bring diverse players to a sport often inaccessible based on cost. Sportsmanship is prioritized.
NorthStar utilizes the E + R = O (Event + Response = Outcome) Framework for all athletic teams. This framework helps guide our coaches, players and parents in pursuit of fulfilling the Mission, Vision and Outcomes we seek for boys participating in youth sports through NorthStar. The primary role of coaches is to develop players’ self-confidence, tenacity, and grit to compete. This position requires a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
This position will be paid as a stipend ($3,000 - $5,000) at the end of the lacrosse season.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Year-round: (approx. 5 hours per week)
- Promote and develop NorthStar Lacrosse on both the High School and Youth Levels.
- Recruit and supervise High School assistants and Youth Coaches.
- Communicate with other NELAX Coaches to schedule games and travel opportunities.
- Work with Athletics Department to recruit students within NorthStar boundaries to participate in Lacrosse and provide information to the broader community on the benefits of the program.
- Attend all NELAX meetings (Monthly Zoom Call)
- Manage assignments and duties of High School assistant coaches (volunteer and contracted) as well as Youth Head Coach.
Spring: Primary Lacrosse Season (approx. 10 – 12 hours per week (Jan – May)
- High School Lacrosse (9th – 12th grade)
- Season runs from March through May.
- Minimum 3 weekday practices and some weekends.
Summer (approx. 5 hours per week (June/July)
- Development Camps & Team playing opportunities
Fall (approx. 5 hours per week (Sept – December)
- Fall ball/ Box Lacrosse opportunities
- Prepare and/or supervise the preparation of season, practice plans and workouts on both High School and Youth levels
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Excellent time management skills
- Ability to formulate practice plans and schedules
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to remain calm in highly sensitive and / or urgent situations
- Proven success in building relationships
- Demonstrated ability to devise proactive approaches to problem solving
- Ability to successfully interact in heterogenous cultural groups
Requirements
- Must be 21 Years of age or older
- High School diploma or GED required; Associates degree preferred
- Playing, coaching and/or advising experience necessary
- Pass background check, drug screening, possess valid motor vehicle license and be insurable under NorthStar Insurance
- Membership and Gold level Coach certification through USA Lacrosse
- Schedule that allows for infrequent travel
Physical and Environmental Conditions
Work is typically performed in an active and athletic environment, while standing, sitting and / or walking, with a high level of public contact, both over the phone and in person. Hours may vary depending upon time of year. Occasional lifting (up to 70 lbs.) may be needed.
