Vascular Access Specialist - prn variable shiftUnder general supervision and in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines established within the organization, unit and the Nurse Practice Act, the RN manages the care delivery for patients in the hospital throughout the length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a four-year college or university and 2 years clinical experience required.
Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing with the State of Michigan
BLS required within six months after hire
PICC Insertion Certification required within one year after hire
• Must be able to operate and perform basic computer programs associated with documentation and record keeping in the department.
• Must be able to operate and become proficient using the ultrasound machine for PICC insertions and IV insertions.
• Must be able to operate and become proficient using Sherlock Tip Location System and 3CG technology (Sapiens Tip Position System) for PICC insertions.
• Must demonstrate excellent human relation skills, including verbal and written communication, problem-solving and assertiveness.
• Must be able to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary groups.
• Must demonstrate leadership and organization skills including the ability to work independently and take initiative.
• Must demonstrate a positive attitude and be able to work in and cope with a changing environment.
• Must demonstrate flexibility and team-building skills.
Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time. Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.
Clinical activities as VAST Nurse
• Assists physicians with central venous catheter insertions.
• Performs PICC insertions, dressing changes and surveillance.
• Performs TPN dressing changes and surveillance.
• Assists with difficult IV insertions and blood draws.
• Performs thrombolytic administration for central venous catheters.
Educational activities performed by VAST Nurse
New Hire Nursing Orientation:
• Provides educational opportunities for new staff:
o Teaches Infusion Management and IV Insertion practicums utilizing Evidence-Based Practice.
o Provides varied learning opportunities to enhance knowledge of vascular access.
In-services:
• Assesses and identifies unit and institutional learning needs related to vascular access.
• Develops educational approaches to meet identified learning needs.
• Provides educational opportunities based on identified needs.
• Evaluates effectiveness and appropriateness of provided in-services.
Continuing Education:
• Assesses and identifies learning needs of professional nurses.
• Plans educational offerings/programs based on standards of practice.
• Evaluates effectiveness and appropriateness of continuing education offerings/programs.
• Mentors staff regarding knowledge and skills related to vascular access.
• Provides education to qualified nursing staff to perform advanced skills related to central venous catheters.
Patient / Family Education:
• Assesses learning needs of patient / families.
• Plans and implements the educational process.
• Schedules appropriate learning experiences.
• Educates patients, family and/or designee regarding routine care and emergency procedures related to central venous catheters.
• Uses the Teach-back Method to evaluate comprehension of education.
• Provides follow-up phone calls to patients / families.
Other VAST Responsibilities:
• Develops and reviews policies, procedures and protocols related to vascular access according to Evidence-Based Practice.
• Participates in an annual peer review.
• Participates in monthly staff meetings.
• Acts as an expert resource to individuals, departments, and the community related to vascular access.
• Develops and reviews all teaching plans related to vascular access.
• Supports / participates in research and development of projects and programs that support the Bronson mission, values, and vision.
• Develops department specific goals in alignment with the organizational strategic plan.
• Participates in departmental and multi-disciplinary committees.
