Job Description
The University of Pennsylvania Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital is seeking a nursing supervisor for the Comprehensive Cancer Care section. The Comprehensive Oncology Service is a very busy outpatient service that operates Monday-Friday. Our team includes surgical, medical and radiation oncology. We are looking for a self-motivated CVT with strong communication, organizational and leadership skills to lead our team of 6 nurses, one radiation therapy technician (RTT) and 1 scheduling coordinator.
Job responsibilities:
Floor Responsibilities:
+ Communicate with oncology team to prioritize and organize tasks to ensure efficient workflow
+ Provide specialized nursing care to oncology patients while working collaboratively with clinicians, nurses and students
+ Technical tasks including venipuncture, IVC placement, cystocentesis, suture removal
+ Administration and handling of chemotherapy drugs using PPE and closed system transfer devices
+ Administer/monitor sedations for short procedures. Assist with recovery of sedated/anesthetized patients
+ Assist clinicians during procedures (thoracocentesis, abdominocentesis, aspirates, suture removal, and short surgical procedures) Extensive client communication including patient admission and discharges
+ Coordinate with multiple services in the hospital to ensure efficient flow of cases throughout the day
+ Assist clinicians by communicating with the Wards/ICU nurses re: oncology patients who may need to be housed in the Wards/ICU
+ Transport of animals throughout the hospital—to and from radiology, anesthesia, Wards and oncology as needed
+ Submit blood and tissue samples to the appropriate lab with the appropriate paperwork.
+ Submission of imaging and anesthesia requests
+ Organization of oncology patient’s records
+ Instruct veterinary and Harcum nursing students on various aspects of oncologic treatments and basic chemotherapy safety
+ Work collaboratively with the VCIC nurses to ensure compliance of ongoing oncology trials
Supervisory Responsibilities:
+ Supervise the team of Comprehensive oncology nurses, RTT, and scheduling coordinator.
+ Delegate responsibilities as needed for an organized daily workflow
+ Active, on the floor, supervisor with scheduled time off floor for administrative duties
+ Organize nursing schedule to ensure adequate nursing coverage across the service
+ Properly orient staff to their roles, accountabilities, and performance measures
+ Promote positive employee relations, good morale and teamwork
+ Promote career development of your staff
+ Clearly define work expectations
+ Address performance issues immediately and directly; conduct annual and mid-year “Workday” performance appraisals
+ Collaborate with other supervisors, clinicians and administration to improve patient care and customer service in support of Ryan hospital’s mission
+ Collaborate with the oncology clinicians to create policies and procedures relating to the operation and safety of the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the Comprehensive Oncology Service
+ “Workday” payroll and recruitment
+ Mentor nursing staff
+ Work closely with the section chief to represent Comprehensive Cancer Care at hospital administrative meetings and annual budget meetings
Qualifications
A minimum of 5 years of clinical experience working as a CVT is required, with previous experience working in oncology preferred. Certified Veterinary Technician or board eligible is a requirement.
