Victim AdvocateThe victim advocate, under the general supervision of the Sexual Assault Services System Manager and Volunteer Coordinator/Victim Advocate, provides direct victim advocacy and individual support to survivors and their non-perpetrating significant others on site at hospital emergency rooms, nurse examiner sites, medical offices, police departments, courts, other community organizations and at the Child Advocacy Center. The victim advocate may assist and/or advocate on behalf of victims to link victims with community and system personnel to secure appropriate/requested services. The victim advocate provides coverage for on-call shifts for emergency response services.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 1-2 years’ experience. Must have the skills necessary to cope with a high level of stress, be flexible, handle multiple priorities in a stressful situation, assist with problem solving, work alone, demonstrate a high degree of patience, and adapt to shiftwork. Work which rarely produces a high level of mental/visual fatigue, i.e., less than 20 percent of the work time. The job produces some physical demands. Typical of jobs that include regular walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and some lifting of light weight objects.
Provide in person emergency response services and coverage for assigned on-call shifts via crisis line and pager system. Some evenings and weekends required.
Provide support to primary and secondary victims of sexual violence based on an empowerment philosophy and a trauma informed approach.
Assist in training volunteer victim advocates.
Attend monthly volunteer victim advocate meetings.
Keep informed of program policies, procedures, community resources, and other information related to the provision of quality services.
Maintain program records for contacts with all victims/survivors and enter data/client activities in agency database.
Present a mature, professional demeanor when making contact with other programs, organizations and systems.
Observe confidentiality policy regarding all client and agency information.
Complete required SAS departmental training including, but not limited to, 30-hour staff/volunteer sexual assault training, New Service Provider training through MCEDSV or SAFE Place, and required MiVAN trainings prior to providing direct victim advocacy.
Demonstrates a commitment to providing outstanding customer service in a manner that is reflective of our mission, values, and customer service standards.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
