The Department of Architecture is part of the School of Architecture & Environment within the College of Design at the University of Oregon, an Association of American Universities member and tier-one research institution in the Pacific Northwest that is ranked “highest research activity” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. The Department of Architecture offers fully accredited graduate and undergraduate professional degrees in architecture, a master of science, concurrent master’s degrees, and a Ph.D. in architecture.
The School of Architecture & Environment main campus and the architecture, landscape architecture, and interior architecture departments are in Eugene, Oregon. The Department of Architecture Portland Program is located in Portland, Oregon. Both Portland and Eugene are socially progressive, bike-friendly, and family-friendly cities with ambitious goals for carbon emissions reduction and community well-being. Position Summary
The School of Architecture & Environment in the University of Oregon's College of Design is seeking a visiting instructor at Assistant or Associate Professor level with knowledge in building structures to teach in academic year 2024-25. We invite applications from applicants qualified to teach Structural Behavior in fall term and Structural Design in winter term for architecture students. Possible studios and seminar teaching available depending on interest and duration of appointment (to be coordinated with Department Head).
The structures course is dual-location for students in Eugene and Portland with an instructor in one location and students in both locations. Classes are taught in-person in one location and streamed for students in the other location. The successful instructor can teach from Eugene or Portland campuses.
This appointment will span 6 or 9-months with variable FTE dependent on course load.
Minimum Requirements
Assistant Professor Rank:
• Professional or terminal graduate degree in Architecture or related field (building construction, structural engineering or similar)
• Teaching experience equivalent to one term at a higher education level, or combination of equivalent teaching and professional experience.
Associate Professor Rank:
• Professional or terminal graduate degree in Architecture or related field (building construction, structural engineering or similar)
• Six years of teaching experience or combination of equivalent teaching and professional experience
Visiting faculty members are generally in residence and are expected to participate in the full range of faculty activities. Visiting faculty must hold a like or relevant position at another institution or have recently obtained a terminal degree
Preferred Qualifications
• Three years of teaching experience
• Degree in structural engineering
• Professional experience in structural design for architecture
• Advanced training in Structural Engineering
