6 Month Contract
Pay Range: $40.00 - $50.00per hr
Job Description:
Our client is seeking an experienced Vulnerability Remediation Specialist to join the team on a 6-month contract basis. The primary responsibility of this role is to help manage and execute patching activities across our server environment, ensuring that systems are up to date and secure. The key focus will be around Windows Servers; however they also have a small percentage of Linux servers that need to be addressed also. This is a hands-on role requiring in-depth technical expertise in vulnerability remediation, server patching, and automation. The ideal candidate will work closely with both technical teams and business stakeholders to ensure smooth patching processes, manage downtime, and implement automation strategies for efficiency and security.
Key Responsibilities:
- Vulnerability Remediation Program Execution: Lead and manage the day-to-day activities involved in our vulnerability remediation program. You will be directly responsible for hands-on patching and remediation efforts (not a project management role), ensuring timely and effective mitigation of vulnerabilities.
- Server Environment Knowledge: Collaborate with business and technical teams to plan, schedule, and execute patching on servers and other critical systems. You will be responsible for understanding the environment and ensuring minimal disruption during patching cycles.
- Change Control & Prioritization: Manage change control processes and prioritize servers for patching based on risk and business needs. Ensure clear communication with all stakeholders regarding maintenance windows, downtime, and potential impacts.
- SCCM/WSUS Expertise: Leverage tools like SCCM and WSUS to manage patch deployments. Assist in troubleshooting and manually resolving client patching issues where needed.
- Active Directory & GPO Management: Ensure Active Directory (AD) and Group Policy Objects (GPOs) are configured correctly to support patching efforts, ensuring that servers are compliant and well-positioned for future automation.
- Scripting & Automation: Develop and implement scripts (PowerShell, etc.) to streamline patching tasks, automate processes, and ensure repeatable, efficient patch management procedures.
- Security Focus: Ensure patching efforts align with security best practices, improving the organization's overall security posture by remediating vulnerabilities and ensuring systems are up to date.
- Rollback Procedures: Maintain knowledge of rollback processes for patches that may cause issues with applications, services, or operating systems. You will be responsible for troubleshooting and ensuring quick recovery if issues arise during or after patching.
- Attention to Detail: Maintain a high level of attention to detail to ensure all systems across the environment are fully patched. Track and report on progress, and address any discrepancies to ensure full patch compliance.
Required Skills:
- 3+ years experience in running vulnerability remediation programs, particularly in large-scale Windows server environments. Hands-on – this is NOT a PM position.
- Strong technical understanding of Windows server environments, patching, and working with business teams to minimize downtime. Linux a BONUS.
- Hands-on experience with SCCM and WSUS, with the ability to manually fix client patching issues when required.
- Deep knowledge of Active Directory and Group Policy Objects (GPOs), ensuring systems are appropriately configured for patching.
- Experience with scripting (e.g., PowerShell) to automate and streamline patching and remediation tasks.
- Knowledge of rollback strategies in the event patches cause application or OS failures.
- Strong security focus with an understanding of how patching fits into overall cybersecurity strategies.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including IT, security, and business stakeholders.
- Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail, able to track and report on patching progress accurately.
- Familiarity with other patch management tools and techniques.
- Experience working in cloud-based server environments (e.g., AWS, Azure)
- Certifications in relevant areas (e.g., CompTIA Security+, Microsoft Certified: Windows Server, etc.)
