Sharing Excess operates a wholesale food rescue program out of the Hunts Point Produce Market, one of the largest produce terminals in the world, providing around 60% of the produce to New York City and the surrounding area. We are seeking a Warehouse Associate to oversee and also be hands-on with the daily rescue and redistribution of donated food at Hunts Point. In this position, you will be a part of a team of 10+ who are gleaning through food donations, moving pallets of food, loading trucks, and logistically coordinating the incoming and outgoing deliveries of food donations.
Position Overview:
Our warehouse associates work 9 am - 2 pm every weekday, so being comfortable with early mornings is a must! There is also a need for flexibility with scheduling, with us potentially needing help as early as 7 am and as late as 3 pm (this is not likely to happen often).
Main responsibilities for this position include sorting and packing produce and assisting with warehouse operations in the Hunts Point Produce Market. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working on a close-knit team and in a temperature-controlled warehouse environment. You will assist with a variety of essential tasks to ensure our operations run smoothly and be an essential part of our nonprofit as we reduce food waste and food insecurity across New York City.
Responsibilities:
- Inspecting produce and sorting edible vs. non-edible food (looking for bruising, mold, puncture wounds, etc. and sorting out inedible produce)
- Setting up, breaking down, and general upkeep of food sorting area
- Weighing food donations with a pallet scale
- Helping maintain accurate records of food donations
- Supervising and training on-site volunteer produce sorters, when applicable
- Packing produce in boxes ready for distribution
- Moving pallets of produce with an electrical power jack
- Helping coordinate and move food from the sorting area to the loading dock or external vehicles
- Maintaining a safe and clean warehouse environment
Qualifications:
- Available 9 am - 2 pm M-F
- Forklift certification preferred
- Must have a personal vehicle or reliable transportation (Our warehouse is in an industrial area & not accessible via public transportation)
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods (up to 7 hours)
- Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds at one time
- Capability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive motions
- Comfortable working in a temperature-controlled environment (cooler temperatures)
- Ability to maneuver through a busy warehouse and handle food safely
Compensation: Starting Salary: $20/hour.
