The City of Georgetown is now accepting applications for the position of Water Distribution Mechanic I!
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
* Responds promptly to calls for water distribution system repair service.
* Constructs, installs, and maintains water service lines and mains; completes water taps and service connections and associated appurtenances.
* Locates, troubleshoots, and repairs broken water mains and service lines.
* Installs, replaces, maintains, and/or repairs water meters and fire hydrants; flushes hydrants and tests hydrant flow pressure. Assists with the planning and installation of all infrastructures for all new developments within the City.
* Manages distribution system appurtenances as required or requested including air relief valves, isolation valves, fire hydrants, etc.
* Operates a variety of light and heavy automotive, construction, or specialized equipment as required to complete assigned tasks; equipment may include a backhoe, excavator, dump truck, vactor truck.
* Inspects equipment for proper and safe working condition; cleans and maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
* Transports equipment and materials to and from worksites.
* Performs clean-up and minor landscaping work on properties after work is completed.
* Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, contracts, permits, and standards of quality and safety. Maintains accurate and complete work records.
* Receives and responds to inquiries, concerns, complaints, and requests for assistance from customers and the general public regarding areas of responsibility.
* Attends meetings, training, etc. as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills to include annual water, asbestos, and First Aid/CPR training.
* Exercises water main valves and prepares and/or generates a variety of documents.
* Reviews and maintains various records and reports including work orders, tap orders, water leak records, quality of service, and pressure-related complaints.
* Refers to work orders, maps, valve books, equipment manuals, and locate requests.
* Interacts and communicates with various internal and external groups and individuals.
* Utilizes a variety of tools such as wrenches, shovels, mechanical tools, plumbing tools, etc.
* Performs clean up duties in and around water utilities buildings; maintains yard and building, and performs minor weed-eating around fire hydrants.
* Assists all Water Utilities Divisions as needed.
* May serve on City Safety Committee.
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of heavy machines and equipment. Must be able to push, stoop, lift, pull, reach, kneel , climb, crawl, crouch, carry or otherwise move objects. Work involves walking or standing for periods of time. Must be able to lift/carry weights of up to 80 pounds.
Minimum Qualifications:
* High School Diploma supplemented by a minimum of zero to one (0 - 1) years' experience in a job-related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
* Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire.
* Current Class D Water Distribution Operator License, or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.
