Water Distribution/Sanitary Collection System Operator - Merrick & Company

Water Distribution/Wastewater Collection System Operator participates in a wide variety of skilled activities related to operating, inspecting, maintaining, and troubleshooting water and sanitary sewer systems and equipment. Ideally candidate possesses a strong understanding of water distribution and sanitary sewer system operations. Candidate may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.

Typical hourly rate range for this position is $30.00 - $37.00. Base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

• Performs a variety of skilled, semi-skilled duties involved in the inspection, diagnosis, troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and servicing of water distribution and sanitary sewer collection system equipment, components, facilities, and machinery.
• Collect all compliance samples per the system monitoring schedule and deliver them to a certified lab for analysis.
• Serves as a technical resource for customer service representatives, engineering and construction activities related to more technical water and sanitary operations and maintenance.
• Troubleshooting, analyzing, and correcting pressure zone irregularities.
• Performing inspection on and maintaining existing and new water systems and sanitary sewer systems.
• Contact and coordinate with emergency response contractors in the event of water system outages/emergencies or sanitary sewer backups/spills/emergencies.
• Perform fire hydrant flow testing, inspection and preventative maintenance of sanitary sewer lift stations, equipment, and force mains.
• Works closely with development, operations, and specialty contractors in the inspection of the installation of new wet utilities to ensure standards are met. Records and documents daily activities and findings in coordination with engineer and management staff.
• Researching, identifying, and ordering spare or replacement parts for pumping equipment and system operating components.
• Inspects and maintains pumps, valves, motors, and other equipment located in pump stations and other points within the water distribution or sanitary sewer collection systems.
• Verbally reports emergency and water quality issues to management and initiates proper action per procedures and follow-up procedures.
• Attends and conducts technical and safety training meetings, courses, and seminars, as required.
• In-depth understanding of and experience with water distribution and wastewater collection systems and the equipment and procedures used in the operation of distribution systems.
• Working knowledge of operations and maintenance of wastewater lift stations.
• Knowledge of pump operations and understanding of pump curves, efficiencies, and technology including basic knowledge of electricity, hydraulics, and pneumatics to inspect equipment and request repair and maintenance.
• Knowledge of equipment and procedures used in the operation of distribution systems.
• Knowledge of and commitment to safety practices and processes.
• Demonstrated knowledge of CDPHE drinking water and clean water regulations, sampling, and permitting requirements.
• General knowledge of development review and construction inspection.
• Ability to work independently with broad direction and limited supervision.
• Ability to provide technical guidance to management, technical personnel, and contractors.
• Ability to work effectively with supervisors and co-workers and deal tactfully with the public.
• Demonstrate with all interactions, a high level of quality customer service; a positive and professional demeanor; the ability to exercise sensitivity; the ability to handle stressful situations in a diplomatic and tactful manner.
• Basic computer knowledge including, but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Basic knowledge of safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment and ability to apply safety principles on all job tasks including the ability to read and interpret documents such as Safety Data Sheets, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, blueprints, and technical documentation.

• Colorado Water Distribution System Operator Class 3 license and/or Colorado Wastewater Collections System Operator Class 3 license.
• 3-5 years of relevant and progressively responsible experience in the operations and maintenance of water distribution or wastewater collection systems troubleshooting techniques, maintenance, and repair skills.
• Obtain certifications as eligibility allows and always keep professional certifications active and current.
• Ability to reach and understand maps, construction drawings, specifications, Standard Operating Procedures, Emergency Response Plans, Operating Manuals, and as-construction documentation.
