The Water Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for planning and supervising the installation, maintenance and repair of water mains, services, hydrants and valves of the City's water distribution system. This position provides supervision to all Water Maintenance personnel including assessment, training, safety, and hiring decision making. Strong mechanical aptitude and excellent communication, supervisory, organizational, and public relation skills are required.
A DAY IN THE LIFE:
- Directs and supervises the operation and maintenance activities of assigned Water Maintenance personnel responsible for the installation, maintenance, operation, repair, expansion, and relocation of water distribution infrastructure. Monitors and evaluates the operations and activities of the water distribution operations; recommends improvements and modifications;
- Participates in the selection of staff; conducts or coordinates staff training to ensure safe and efficient work performance; works with employees to correct deficiencies, and initiates and administers informal and formal corrective action as needed;
- Operates specialty computer software programs (Lucity, GIS, Microsoft Office, etc.) and prepares various reports on operations and activities. Maintains division records related to the replacement, new installation and repair records of fire hydrants, valves, water mains, and service lines;
- Assists with the development, preparation and implementation of the division's annual operating budget, capital improvement programs and MERF plans to ensure the water distributions system will maintain long term and stable operations and in compliance with all federal and state regulations. Assist with development/implementation of goals, objectives, policies and procedures, relating to providing services and operations by the division;
- Prepares bid specifications, requests for proposals and other related procurement documents to obtain needed supplies, equipment and services. Administers related contracts. Maintain equipment, tool, and material inventory; checks and receives incoming freight;
- Ensures safe work practices by conducting safety related training, and actively monitors and enforces compliance with applicable safety practices and procedures. Conducts routine safety meetings, and timely and effective workplace accident investigations as needed;
- Responds effectively to inquiries from contractors, plumbers, suppliers, and members of the general public.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:
- EDUCATION: A high school diploma or GED is required. Related technical degree or college credit is preferred.
- EXPERIENCE: Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in skilled water maintenance, repair or construction work plus at least one year of supervisory or lead work experience is required.
- CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:A Class IV ABC or KDHE Water Certification is required within twenty-four months of the first eligibility date for obtaining certification. A valid Kansas Driver's License is required, with a Kansas Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.) preferred.
