The Town of Ashland (12.9 sq. mi., pop. 18,853), seeks candidates for Water Technician I in the Water & Sewer division of the Ashland Department of Public Works.
PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The Water Technician I primarily performs work related to construction and maintenance of municipal water and sewer infrastructure. It involves frequent operation of vehicles as well as power- and manual-hand tools, under general supervision. The job responsibilities may include the following or other duties as assigned.
- Efficiently operates essential W&S Equipment needed to perform maintenance and repairs to the Water Distribution System and Sewer Collection System;
- Performs water meter installations;
- Inspects, reports, and maintains pump stations;
- Inspects and maintains generators;
- Inspects and maintains vehicles and equipment as directed;
- Efficiently and accurately performs dig safe mark-outs as directed:
- Reads and interprets engineering blueprints and specifications as they pertain to the water and sewer infrastructure and system;
- Maintains and records daily activity as directed;
- Performs hydrant replacement, maintenance and flushing as directed;
- Uses appropriate PPE on a daily basis;
- Performs all other duties pertaining to Wastewater and Water Distribution Technicians;
- Must be available for call-out at any time for emergency repairs or snow removal activities;
- May be required to be acting foreman when necessary;
- Participates in training related to Pumps, Valves, Electrical Systems, SCADA, Generators, and other key components and equipment related to the pump stations and the Water Distribution System;
- Performs all duties required of subordinates when necessary.
This position is required to be available for all essential services including Water and Sewer related failures, Snow and Ice operations and any other emergencies during or outside regular work hours.

ATTRIBUTES AND QUALIFICATIONS
The Water Tech I position requires a High School degree or equivalent plus a minimum of two - five years of experience in public works and/or the construction industry and basic computer skills for recording and research.
Candidates must hold, or be able to obtain through the Town of Ashland:
Licenses/Certifications (required):
- CDL Class B w/Air Brake Endorsement
- Hoisting 2A/1C and 4G
Licenses/Certifications (preferred):
- Massachusetts Water Distribution I Certificate
- Backflow Prevention Certificate
- Tanker Endorsement

The Water Tech I is a full-time, 40 hour/week, non-exempt position represented by the DPW Union. Salary is based on the chart in the collective bargaining agreement for grade H05, which ranges from $25.47/hr to $33.83/hr. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
