About the Job
The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is currently accepting online applications for a Water/Wastewater Service Worker with Water & Sewer Services Line Maintenance and Construction Division. The employee performs intermediate skilled mechanical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of water lines, pumps, taps and mains in water/wastewater system; does related work as required. Employees in this class perform repair and maintenance on broken wastewater lines; installation of water/wastewater equipment; maintenance of equipment and supply inventories; all work is supervised while in progress and reviewed upon completion.
Essential Functions of Position:
- performs repairs on broken water/wastewater lines and equipment;
- replaces frames and covers;
- installs water/wastewater taps, meters, meter boxes, hydrants, valves and other appurtenances;
- repairs manholes;
- operates core drilling machine, tap machine, air compressor, jack hammer, pipe saw, service truck, and various hand tools;
- performs general clerical skills in filling out work orders;
- utilizes appropriate maps and drawings to locate work site areas in coordination with supervisor;
- ensures highest safety precautions during task performance;
- communicates with supervisor before, during, and after task performance;
- ensures work, maintenance, and repairs are completed properly to avoid recurring failures;
- ensures safety practices of workforce and facilities;
- performs related tasks as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of the construction, assembly and maintenance on a wide variety of plumbing-type equipment; general knowledge and skill in the use of various tools and equipment necessary to perform tasks that vary in nature; ability to utilize safely and efficiently equipment such as air compressors, heavy machinery, etc.; ability to maintain highest level of safety to self, crew, and general public; ability to interpret maps and drawings related to tasks; good physical condition, and ability to endure frequent bending, walking, stooping, twisting, turning, lifting, etc.
Acceptable Experience and Training: Completion of high school diploma or equivalent; on the job experience is the most effective means for mastering the nature of tasks performed generally one to three years of such experience is necessary to perform efficiently; supplemental training is desirable in the procurement of plumbing licensure; an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is acceptable. Must possess a valid commercial driver's license, Class A (57) with Tanker endorsement, issued by the state of Tennessee. Pre-employment DOT physical, drug screening and background check required.
