Overview:
As the Welding Team Lead, you will provide mentorship and guidance to the welding team of about 8 people in the shop. Your humility and flexible approach will foster an environment with open transfer of knowledge and learning.
You will be successful in this role if you are proficient with MIG and TIG welding and are looking for a hands-on role. As a custom job shop, a varied skillset will serve you well with experience welding stainless steel, carbon, and exotic materials.
This role reports to our Operations Manager who has been with the company for many years and is an excellent resource to the shop team. As a small business, we are a close-knit group and all work onsite at our sole location in Owatonna.
Responsibilities:
- Promote a positive and professional work environment by exemplifying our company values
- Assembly and welding of various products, including heat exchangers (pressure vessels), housings and transitions, air handlers, and other assemblies and equipment
- Types of joints to include: tube-to-tube, tube-to-pipe, tube-to-plate, sheet metal, structural steel
- TIG, MIG, and Oxy-acetylene welding on steel, stainless steel, or other metals as required
- Assist, train, and review the work of other welders
- Improve the quality of both the products and the welding department
- Set up, operation, and maintenance of welding equipment
- Maintain ASME welding qualification
- Inspect and test all work completed to verify conformance to specifications
- Operate overhead crane to move heavy objects and forklift to load/unload trucks as needed
- Communicate with supervisor and/or supplier regarding welding supplies
- Report defective materials or questionable conditions to supervisor
- Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition
- Maintain company safety, quality, efficiency, and productivity standards
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- Welding Certificate or higher education
- 5+ years of welding experience in a manufacturing setting
- Successful completion of an internal welding test
- Possess strong welding knowledge, including base metals, wire & filler materials, and welder parameters
- Possess good mechanical aptitude and competency using most hand tools
- Ability to accurately measure objects using hand-held measuring tools
- Ability to read and understand blueprints, order acknowledgment, engineering drawings, and written instruction
- Recognize potential safety hazards and take appropriate actions to minimize risks
- Ability to solve problems and work independently
- Function as a team member and contribute to group goals while maintaining a positive attitude
- Ability to safely and efficiently operate welding equipment, forklifts, and overhead cranes
- Knowledge of basic math skills.
- Ability to understand and communicate in English to the extent necessary to perform all job functions.
