GPTech is looking for a Writer Editor to provide contract support to the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID’s) Power Africa program. Power Africa is a U.S. Government-led partnership that brings together the collective resources of over 170 public and private-sector partners to double the access to electricity in sub-Saharan Africa. Power Africa’s goal is to add more than 30,000 megawatts (MW) of new electricity generation capacity and connect 60 million new homes and businesses to power by 2030. To date, Power Africa has helped bring 126 power generation deals to financial close, for a generation capacity of over 10,400 MW. These 126 deals are valued at over $20 billion. Of these deals, 62 are operational and generating over 4,000 MW of new and more reliable electricity. Since its launch in 2013, Power Africa has connected 16 million homes and businesses to on- and off-grid solutions, bringing first-time electricity to 74 million people across sub-Saharan Africa.
Summary of the Power Africa Communications Program
GPTech assists the Power Africa Coordinator’s Office (PACO) with a wide range of communication needs. GPTech provides project management; supports strategic communications; delivers both written and visual communications support; produces communications materials and trainings for USAID staff, inter-agency partners, development partners, local governments, and private-sector partners; and coordinates and procures physical materials to support the objectives of Power Africa communications.
The Writer Editor will be based in the Washington, D.C., area to support PACO on immediate needs in the D.C. time zone.
Responsibilities:
The position will be responsible for drafting communications materials and assist the implementing partner craft and edit a variety of products, including speeches, briefers, press releases, fact sheets, success stories, outreach-related items, and talking points. Materials will largely focus on Power Africa and the energy infrastructure sector as well as the beneficiaries of energy-related programs in sub-Saharan Africa. The products will be for various communication platforms, including exhibitions, trainings, human-interest projects, websites, print, video, and social media.

- In coordination with GPTech and Power Africa, act as a writing consultant to collaboratively develop clear creative concepts and writing deliverables. Provide direct services under a tight deadline.
- Conceptualize develop and deliver writing solutions for a wide variety of projects, including internal and external information products, multimedia materials, including, but not limited to, reports, talking points, blogs and event materials, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters, exhibit/signage materials, online products, and the Power Africa website.
- Provide overall editorial input for communications materials, content, and visuals.
- Remain current on Power Africa programs and priorities in the region.
- Monitor and coordinate final drafts of program documents and outreach materials with relevant stakeholders.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in journalism, technical writing, public relations, or speech writing
- Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, international development, or a related field from an accredited college
- Proven experience in disseminating information to a variety of target audiences
- Strong editing skills and attention to detail
- Experience crafting informational messages in multimedia formats
- Knowledge of standard principles, methods, and practices of communication and information management to design and implement public events and outreach materials preferred. Solid understanding of websites requires
- Familiarity with USAID’s Writing Standards required
- Superior judgment and ability to perform under pressure and meet tight deadlines, sometimes with limited supervision
- Ability to work independently or as a member of a team
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple competing priorities
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Excellent computer skills including working use of MS Office
- Proven experience creating content for social media platforms
- Excellent knowledge of English grammar and American word usage and spelling required
