JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/Objective
The Town of Oxford is looking for a WRTA Van Driver. The Van Driver provides for the safe and timely transportation of senior citizens to various locations throughout the Town of Oxford and other communities as scheduled by WRTA. Employee provides assistance to patrons, as needed, while boarding and departing the department bus. The employee works under the direct supervision of the Senior Center Director and the Town of Oxford where clear, detailed and specific instructions, department practices or regulations govern the work performed or are explained with each assignment. Questionable situations are referred to the Director for clarification and further instructions.
Essential Functions

- Responsible for operating a multi-passenger van in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations. MUST attend occasional MASSDOT trainings provided by WRTA.
- Employee attention to detail is imperative as errors could result in missed deadlines, adverse public relations, legal repercussions, personal injury, jeopardized programs, and danger to public health/safety.
- Attends training programs to maintain knowledge of requirements to operate a multi passenger transportation van
- Assist passengers boarding and departing the bus
- Provides assistance to passengers with special needs, i.e. using a wheelchair
- Maintains cleanliness of a passenger vehicle and reports any operational deficiencies to Senior Center Director.
- All other duties as assigned
Competencies
- Working knowledge of passenger van driving rules, regulations, and operation.
- Knowledge of the street layout of Oxford and surrounding municipalities including the City of Worcester.
- Ability to drive a multi passenger vehicle safely, be aware of surroundings, and assist passengers with special needs as required.
- Must have good interpersonal oral communication skills.
- Must be patient, considerate, and respectful of elders.
- Basic Computer knowledge is a must.
Supervisory Responsibility
None.
Work Environment
Working conditions involve occasional exposure to intermittent machine or related noise or a combination of unpleasant elements such as odors, chemical fumes, dust, smoke, heat, cold, oil, dirt or grease when transporting elderly passengers. Work may involve general cleaning, occasional work at heights or in confined or cramped quarters, or work around machinery and its moving parts.
Physical Demands
Must be able to push up to 300 pounds. Work effort principally involves sitting to perform work tasks, with intermittent periods of stooping, walking, and standing. There may also be some occasional lifting of objects including but not limited to assisting frail elderly to enter and exit from the passenger van. Duties are largely mental rather than physical, but the job may occasionally require minimal motor skills for activities such as moving objects. Employee is routinely required to read documents or road signs while operating a passenger van for general understanding. The employee is required to determine color differences on a regular basis.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
This is a part-time non-benefit eligible position.
Travel
Local travel required.
Required Education and Experience
1. Minimum of high school diploma with two to three (2-3) years of passenger driving experience preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
2. Must have a valid Class D Driver’s License, as well as a good driving record.
3. Knowledge of operation of van lift.
4. A condition of employment is that employee is subject to passing random drug and alcohol tests.
