Mule Driver Job Description
Position Overview: A Mule Driver is responsible for transporting trailers and containers within the yard or between designated areas. This role ensures efficient trailer movement to support warehouse operations, loading and unloading activities, and keeps the yard organized. The Mule Driver works closely with warehouse and logistics teams to maintain smooth operational flow.
Key Responsibilities:
- Trailer Movement: Safely operate a yard mule (also known as a yard goat or yard truck) to move trailers and containers within the yard.
- Dock Assignments: Spot trailers at the loading docks and ensure they are ready for loading or unloading.
- Pre/Post Inspections: Perform daily checks and inspections of the mule and trailers for any damages or maintenance needs.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols, traffic guidelines, and site-specific operational standards.
- Yard Organization: Maintain proper order in the yard by ensuring trailers are placed in designated areas and optimizing space.
- Communication: Coordinate with warehouse managers, supervisors, and drivers to facilitate trailer movements according to priority.
- Documentation: Complete required documentation related to trailer movements, such as logs and reports, when necessary.
- Preventive Maintenance: Report any mechanical issues with the mule or trailers and assist with basic upkeep.
- Assist with Loading/Unloading: In some cases, assist warehouse personnel in moving items or securing loads.
Qualifications:
- Experience operating a yard mule or yard truck.
- Valid driver's license (CDL may be required in some cases).
- Ability to work in various weather conditions.
- Knowledge of yard operations, warehouse safety protocols, and traffic regulations.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Good communication skills to effectively interact with team members and supervisors.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit for extended periods while operating a vehicle.
- Must be able to lift and move items up to 50 lbs as needed.
- Flexibility to work shifts, including nights and weekends, based on business needs.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor yard setting, exposure to varying weather conditions.
- Frequent walking, standing, and lifting may be required.
